I waited for the right time to view this dvd with my husband and granddaughter, both of whom are struggling with some life decisions. Neither of them likes reading, so even though I have handed them the book, The Secret, it sits unread. They both watched the entire movie and I believe it is already helping them to define their goals. I have been using the law of attraction for many years and am a firm believer. IT WORKS!

This has got to be one of the most the most boring films I've ever seen. I bought the book a few years ago and couldn't get into it, so I thought now that the film was more reasonably priced I'd take a look at it. Even at a reduced price, it is a waste of time and money. What a load of foolishness! I couldn't finish watching I was so bored with it. Even for free this is a waste of your time to watch.

This film begins without saying but showing that the secret originates from an emerald tablet. The Emerald tablet when searched through wikipedia is one of the core works of an ancient cult from the middle east known as Hermeticism.
While in the film they promote being in tune with your desires and the universe being a magic genie to catter to your every whim if done propperly; largely, in the film, to achieve material wealth. While the one thing according to Hermetic principles that God views as extremely Sinfull is focus on material life. This contridiction demonstrates a perversion from the claimed origins of the secret.
They then go on to list most of the great western thinkers throughout history and claim they all knew the secret, while it is most likely true that they knew a bit about Hermeticism, for the fact that Hermeticism was adopted by the west for use in magic such as alchemy in the middle ages and was a widespread knowledge of the time but was indeed kept as a sort of secret by alchemists. But what the secret promotes as the secret itself, being the Law Of Attraction, has nothing to do with Hermeticism what so ever.
In fact the ideology of the secret is based on each individual being in tune with their own personal desires and attracting them using LOA because, and heres where it gets extreme, every single aspect of our life we manifested through LOA; whether it be good or bad there is no one to blame except yourself. (Sorry Africa but I guess the Mormans are right) So positive thinking becomes an important aspect of LOA and negative thinking attracts negativity so that is the source of all ones problems according to the secret. The funny thing is to me this sounds a lot like neoliberal thinking to me, merely wraped into a new age spiritual framework.
Milton friedman (One of the designers of the NeoLiberal model) thinking goes something like this, If everyone acts out of their own selfish desires for their own personal gain it will creat a balance in society and the poor and suffering do so because its their own fault, when asked if their was a place for Altruism in his theory he states, "There is no place for that." Yet the secret has managed to find a way for it fit right back into the Neo liberal model of acting out of individual desires merely because of the the infantile thinking of you deserve something just because you desire it, because the universe is a magic genie that will grant everyone there wish everytime so never allow a negative thought to enter ones mind, to me this sounds more like denial of apart of oneself which is like choosing an ingnorant self delusion.
My take is that The Secret is like Anarchy symbols in the mall, a Simulacra of something from the counter culture scooped up by the all consuming marketing machine and regurgetated back at us for xx dollars and twisting the original concepts into something that perpetuates the current systems that dominate and control society. Aimed to catch those potential free thinkers and wrangle them back into the herd.
I recomend reading the Book Simulacra and Simulation. Its the book neo holds in the matrix. Which extolls the concept that a simulacra is a symbolic representative of something real and our society has become these symbols which is made real and replaced the original. I also reccomend the film How Art Made the world which pretty much documents the creating of the simulacra from the stone ages till present. Also The documentary series Century of Self and The Trap. Both of these series explain the propoganda models of present times with interviews by the designers and explains their reasoning and philosophy and how it has evolved. The trap in many was shows where Neoliberalism comes from, while never uttering the term Neoliberalism.
The film had value for me to see better how society is being manipulated and the evolution of this propoganda to better fit everyone into the clasps of the current ideologies that dominate society.
