5 out of 5 stars Simple but Not Easy   May 28, 2008

This book really speaks to me. My mind is so busy that sometimes I absentmindedly arrive at a place and then ask myself what I wanted to do here. Within a few moments my mind goes through a number of different thoughts forgetting about the reason that directed me to a certain place. And this is why this book is so helpful. Eckhart Tolle provides simple solution to people like me. The solution is simple but in no way it is easy! The solution is getting rid of the noise in the head and focusing on the present moment and the one single activity that you are undertaking in this moment.

In a way this book is -- to a certain degree -- a rehash of the author's previous work titled "The Power of Now." However, if you have already read The Power of Now I still suggest getting "A New Earth" as there is still a great amount of new material. In a way in both books Tolle deals with the same subject matter, but in my opinion he is doing a much better job explaining the subject in this book. The author's soft-spoken manner permeates the whole work and makes it an easy and relaxed reading.

A big part of the book is devoted to identifying the many faces of (and dealing with) the "EGO" ("the voice in the head that pretends to be you") which is the culprit of our mental suffering that author calls "The Pain-Body" ("the emotions that are the body's reaction to what the voice in the head is saying"). Tolle suggests ways for breaking free of the Pain-Body and finding who you really are.

Unhappiness and negativity are everywhere around us. Surprisingly they are felt more deeply in the affluent western world, as we are more deeply identified with forms and trapped in our egos. The joy of being, the only true happiness, cannot come to us from anywhere, we can only experience it from the formless dimension within us after we allow the diminishment of the ego.

This book is not to be read like a novel. I suggest reading it slowly - just a few pages at a time, and practicing the author's suggestions. In the realm of spirituality no-one of us will probably have the same experience, but I dare say that the deeper you get into it the more powerful the experience will be. The secret is getting to the awareness outside of thinking, to the awareness of true being. Get the book and try it out. It might also speak to you.

5 out of 5 stars Dust in the wind   May 19, 2008

Periodically I find myself contemplating the complexity of who we are and why we are, searching the myriad of experience that I am, aspiring to a broader understanding of the nature of existence. I juggle bits and pieces of information and may then form a hypothesis which may lead to a deeper understanding - or perhaps more enigma. All of the evidence of whom and what we are is here around us and within us. Has not every cognitive person asked themselves - Who am I, why am I here?
Most of the time much of us find ourselves entrenched in the physical world, but some maybe enlightened. This enlightenment seems to be rooted in the acceptance of "what is". In acceptance of "what is" there seems no need for understanding of the perplexities of our being. This maybe so, but my mind still dwells upon the riddle of me, you, and all things. In reflection of all things also comes the consideration of what is not manifest. Sages, through history, speak of the interconnectedness of all that is, the expanse that exists between all the atoms throughout the entire universe. This enormity of empty space may receive no consideration from some, but is important to science and perhaps philosophy.

I read somewhere that we are all born of the stars, dust in the wind. This seems a logical conclusion when considering the substance that makes up our physical existence. All of the elements put into existence by the whirling, churning, burning forces of the universe. The elements created and cast out into infinity, all of them in constant flux, but configured to bring us to the present moment. So here we are you and I experiencing the chaos, the interaction of all that surrounds us. Struggling, or not, with the moral dilemmas which we create. But what about all the space between?

Having read Eckhart Tolle's The Power of Now and A New Earth, I am contemplating more on the space between. Is the awareness in each of us a part of the space between? Does it connect us? Is this soul? Is this where consciousness resides? The concept is intriguing and does seem to resonate to the core of my own being. I have and do intentionally use meditation to bring my mind to a state of calm. Now I also meditate with the intention of experiencing stillness, intensity of perception, and maybe to experience connectedness.

Through Eckhart's writing I have come to understand, at a deeper level, previously read material. The "between the lines" psychology of Eckhart's insights may be a catalyst to attaining and maintaining a healthier mind. For anyone that has ever considered themselves a seeker of spiritual truth, contentment, peace etc. I highly recommend reading Eckhart Tolle's books.

1 out of 5 stars This book forgets human nature   May 3, 2008

"Awakening to Your Life's Purpose" is not the road to happiness and fulfillment. Human nature as it exists in all people around the world cannot be overcome by the good intentions of a bunch of people who read this book. As for your life's purpose, it is to grow up, get married, have a couple of children, and concentrate on supporting and nurturing a loving family. If you do not do that, you will end up confused and reading books about what your life's purpose is.

1 out of 5 stars Poorly written, needlessly repetitive, weakly regurgitated rehash of other cultures' ideas   April 26, 2008

I suspect there is some sort of positive selection bias in the reviews that appear for this book here. Not only is it horribly written--both simplistically certain in the authority of its words and at the same time laughingly self-contradictory and inconsistent and imprecise--but it also doesn't bother to credit the folks from which these millennia old ideas have been lifted. Was it a marketing decision to include only the Jesus and New Testament stuff in what passes as a bibliography? This guy is a freak, and it is testament only to the dumbed down level of discourse in the United States (and Canada) and the popular sense of perfidy and meaningless of contemporary culture that this charlatan (although admittedly there has never been a dearth of commercially successful quick fix snake oil peddlers) would have been embraced to uncritically.

5 out of 5 stars Good Follow Up To the Power of Now   April 16, 2008

A good follow up to The Power of Now. I wrote the following review about TPON and here it is repeated, but additional comments.

Reading this book was like a condensed version of the many classes I have attended from my spiritual teacher. Eckhart Tolle presents difficult to comprehend subjects in simple to understand language. However, do not expect that this "easy read" will result in instant enlightenment. He sets the basics down, it is up to the reader to absorb and act upon the lessons.

I always leave a weekend workshop at my spiritual teacher's ashram on a natural high. This book gave me that same feeling. It is a wonderful book to help guide you on your spiritual journey.

A New Earth guides the reader further along the path with excellent commentary. The book is grounding. Good reminder to keep my ego out of my way!
