Not worth the money September 11, 2008 Me myself 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
A cool idea at it's core, but this game underdelivers and was subject to some very questionable design decisions. It's almost as though noone actually played it as they were developing it. Some of it's issues include -buggy camera -long death sequence that is not interruptable. I mean, who thought that was a good idea? -buggy (clipping issues, sound issues) -visuals are average at best -redundant looting system. Everytime you acquire a killer weapon you will undoubtedly find a better one a few minutes later. -menu system that feels like a spread sheet program -substandard character modeling, dialog and voice syncing. Not worth buying. Renting maybe.

10 Years in the Making?!?! August 22, 2008 D. Chandon (Toronto, Ontario Canada) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
To err is human, and "Too Human" has a bunch of err-ors. After waiting roughly 10 years for "Too Human", as well as roughly 5 years of hearing the folks at Silicon Knights blither on about how this is the re-telling of Baldur and Ragnorok. I have to admit that I wasn't too familiar with the Baldur and his story, by-the way Baldur looks like a shaved gorilla, but apparently according to people at Silicon Knights they want you to read the story outside the game, which is an odd choose considering that with story-telling regardless of the forum backstory is always required, and by that statement the developer wants to lose people's focus from the game to other venues. Makes no sense when you're trying to get a captive audience. Anywho, "Too Human" assumes too much with its audience with the story by not re-telling the story, also making the entire story unfold in the last 10 minutes. "Too Human" begins by the player deciding which kind of character they will be, which is pointless considering that every character becomes a hack and slashing, upgradeable character, then Too Human kinda insults the audience by ripping off Beowulf with the battle against Grendel, which basically sets the tone of this disappointing foray into Norse mythology, with the story of the end of the Norse panteon of gods, as well as the eventual death of faith, which isn't made obvious but implied. The player as Baldur is charged with the task of discovering what has happened to him by going through 4 large and pointless dungeons in this dungeon crawling game of collection. As I stated before the game itself has no real story, just references characters in mythology, so going through these big dungeons is just an excuse to get new and better weapons, and that is really the only reason to replay this game. There is nothing to unlock or new information to find that'll forward the story, the player must go through the dungeon to the end and fight the boss then cutscenes take over for exposition. Now for presentation, the graphics are good enough for the current generation, and the fighting can be satisfying sometimes when you're not dying constantly from the swarming of enemies. That's another bad thing with this game, the constant death and death animation that can not be skipped ever, it is quite horrible having to see a Valkirye float down slowly with the same stirring music to pick up Baldur ever so slowly then float up to the heavens with a re-spawning a few feet away, just to die again and have the whole process begin again, sound great huh? There's more, all the enemies are clones of each other but with elemental or status variants, by-the way if Baldur gets burned or poisoned there's no way to heal yourself either, so if you do have a status based ailment Baldur will die, then there's that death animation again, and hope you don't get burned or poisoned again. Baldur moves very, very slowly when compared to the enemies, you can slide to get closer and put a strike to an enemy but then you're basically in the thick of a group and Baldur will die, yet again, then there's that death animation. I realize I'm repeating myself a lot but this is what Too Human is, a bunch of repetition and death, not to mention the horrible camera. Any gamer knows what the right thumb stick is generally for, camera control, not with Too Human, the right thumb stick is used for melee and aiming ranged attacks, which isn't that good. The player will have to deal with the camera direction that the game sees as being fit, so you'll die more because of the camera and how it gets stuck in corners or focused away from the action. I don't understand why this was done, but it was, and it'll drive you crazy. Also the contradiction is very much there and beating the player in the face, how Baldur and the rest of the gods, aka protectors of humanity don't really do any protecting of humanity, which may be a themeatic choice that isn't explained properly, or just laziness, if these gods are the protectors of these people why not have them do actual side-quests that either proctect or rescue the humans, which is another odd choice this game makes. But the most bizarre decision that Silicon Knights made with producing this game is that the patheon of norse gods are like the panteon of all mythological deities, meaning they are incestuous, the love interest to Baldur is actually his sister, this would be odd and creepy way to set up a love story, but this is "Too Human" and what this game does no other game or developer would even consider. "Too Human" is an interesting first attempt at a trilogy, and unfortunately this game falls victim to it's own design and the many flaws of that design as well as a story that isn't there and doesn't evolve at all. There was or is potential with the title or maybe this franchise if the game is actually worth re-visiting to see if the many problems and glitches should be fixed, this game could be slated to be another Advent Rising, a potential series but with too many errors and problems not worth the time. This game is worth the rental, and I did enjoy the combat sometimes, the death animation is something that can ruin the game, the lack of punishment for dying is a poor design choose, also the story being a convulted mess of poor exposition and incest makes this game a very tough sell, especially considering that Silicon Knight had a large amount of time to make this game. And I so wanted to support my fellow Canadians with this game.
