Editorial Reviews:

From Amazon.com
Dreamcatcher, not listed as a greatest-hits collection, is made up of previously recorded works. Secret Garden, Irish violinist Fionnuala (fi-NOO-la) Sherry, and Norwegian pianist/keyboardist Rolf Lovland, along with various guest musicians, always manage to surprise and execute their craft with a remarkable gracefulness of sound. Lush, rich, full-bodied, and passionate, Secret Garden stands eye-to-eye with other successful Celtic/world-music hybrids such as Loreena McKennitt and Clannad. Highlighted by the ethereal vocal styling of Gunnhild Tvinnereim ("Nocturne") and the tender laments of Karen Matheson ("Prayer"), Secret Garden weaves a mystical tapestry of classic Oriental notes, Irish flutes, deep bodhran, and bold violins. With the crystalline quality of pure water, Secret Garden descends over one's spirit in a tranquil waterfall of renewal, as demonstrated in "Sigma" and "Songs from a Secret Garden." "Elan," which originally appeared on the album Dawn of a New Century, reflects the fire that burns at the heart of Secret Garden. The song soars with a wild, sea-swept energy, a true soundscape of white-sand beach and blue sky. A bonus cut, "Last Present," closes out Dreamcatcher with a simple, balanced melody--poised and inspiring. Dreamcatcher, a collection of some of the best musical moments of Secret Garden, is a fine acknowledgement of an inventive group of musicians who are consistently setting a high and impressive standard in modern Celtic/New Age music. --Leslie R. Marini

4 out of 5 stars Nice !   February 12, 2007

Secret Garden are living proof that - contrary to what certain people would have you believe - something good can come out of the Eurovision Song Contest. The duo - Fionnuala Sherry, a violinist, and Rolf Lovland, a pianist - won the competition for Norway in 1995. Rolf was one of Norway's most successful songwriters before forming the band. Fionnuala is actually Irish and had played with the RTE Philharmonic Orchestra for ten years before joining the band.

"Dreamcatcher" is a compilation album, covering the band's first three albums. It was released in 2000 and contains 18 tracks, the majority of which are instrumental. The overall style is like a mixture if Celtic and classical - in some parts it reminds me of some of Enya's songs, in others it sounds closer to "Riverdance". The album opens with the band's Eurovision winning entry, "Nocturne". Gentle and relaxing, it's an absolutely beautiful track. By and large, though, I tend to prefer the livelier tracks. "Elan" are "Moving" are among the tracks that remind me of "Riverdance". Another favourite is "Dawn of a New Century". It includes a 'narration', that reminded me a little of Jeff Wayne's "War of the Worlds" and is also one of two tracks to feature Anuna. (Anuna also provided some tracks to the "Riverdance" show). Their other performance is on "In Our Tears", which is sung in Latin and feels a more formal , choral style track. For me, "Sona" is a better track that this one - sung in Irish by Fionnuala, it also features some nearly Gregorian-style backing vocals. Anuna are not the only guest performers - another is Davy Spillane, one of Ireland's best known uilleann pipers. He features on two tracks - "The Rap" ( a lively, though short, number) and "Hymn to Hope".

As a largely instrumental 'new age' act, this probably won't be to everyone's taste. However, if that is your sort of thing, this compilation is a very good place to start with the band. My recommendation ? Go on - buy it !

5 out of 5 stars Exquisite!   June 22, 2004
M. Halasovski (Whitehall, PA United States)
The haunting music in this album excites and delights, soothes and restores a peaceful feeling after a long, hard day.

I only purchase extraordinary music. I am well satisfied with the music in this album, particulary "Dreamcatcher", a very beautiful song.

I have three of their albums now, and of the three I would rate "Dreamcatcher" number one. It has compilations using different artists, but it all fits together very nicely.

4 out of 5 stars Dreamcatcher   May 31, 2004
Myra Schjelderup (Salt Lake City, Utah, USA)
Dreamcatcher can be classified as New Age, World, or Classical.
This CD consists of 19 songs, none of which, that I've noticed, have words. Except for Dreamcatcher (Track 4), which has some words at the beginning and end of the song. This song is the most beautiful on the whole CD, and the only reason I gave the CD 4 stars. The rest of the songs are pretty, but nothing really great. Dreamcatcher has a haunting, beautiful, melody, that is also very soothing. Get this CD and enjoy it, or don't get it and know that you are passing by a great song.

5 out of 5 stars Extraordinario!   April 16, 2004
Mauricio Aguilar (Santiago, Chile)
