Great dvd for hand technique May 24, 2010

This DVD is great for any drummer who wants to improve his hands. You have to work a lot (as always) but at least you know you are doing it right with this DVD.

If you're ready to move beyond 4/4 rhythm and to really get your sticks moving then this is the DVD set for you. JoJo breaks down and explains, in easy to digest morsels, how to get control of your sticks so that you can begin to learn and incorporate drum rudiments into your playing. The close ups of the grippings and the slow motion replays really help to understand what is happening, a feature often missed from other DVDs that attempt to cover these concepts. There's a reason this is one of Hudson Music's best sellers and often cited by other drummers (ex: Todd Sucherman does in his DVD "Methods and Mechanics") as a must have.

After watching a few Jim Chapin and Joe Morello clips on Youtube demonstrating the Moeller technique at an extremely high level of proficiency, I wanted more. I ordered Morello's Master Studies books and Jojo Mayer's video. Mayer is a fantastic teacher. His passion for the subject is infectious. He explains everything in an easily comprehensible, detailed and fun manner. Where guys like Weckl and Smith mention the technique but gloss over it quickly, Meyer gets down with it. He also expands on it and gives great tips on practicing. This is a 2 disc DVD so there is enough material to keep you busy for awhile. If you didn't have the opportunity to study with Jim Chapin or Joe Morello, this is the next best thing. Applying the material in this DVD over the last month has improved my abilities immensely and I'm an old guy. If you are willing to practice and really want to take it up another notch, you will find the "Secret Weapons" in Jojo's DVD!
