It's been way too long!!! November 24, 2008 Sebastien Lessard (Richmond, BC Canada) Being a longtime fan(since "...And Justice For All") of the band and finding merit in both "Load" and "Re-Load" I was skeptical when I heard Metallica was turning back the clock on their new album. After hearing the same thing before the release of "St.Anger" and being disappointed by that mess of an album with a drum sound the equivalent of hiting a garbage can. "Death Magnetic" is an album from a band comfortable in their own skin and having fun making music again. The songs are longer with a lot of time changes, great guitar work and a very militaristic drum sound. "Cyanide" is a good fist pumper of a tune and "End of the Line" has a cool groove. Finally, we have an instrumental again in "Suicide & Redemption". Very cool and addictive song. "Unforgiven III" has great a build-up and "My Apocalypse" is the closest you'll get to old school Metallica. I think there's a little bit here for every Metallica fan.
Mediocre... but it's still Metallica October 29, 2008 Paul S. Power (Nova Scotia, Canada) For Metallica there's probably never been a CD as important as this one. After the sonic insult that was called "St. Anger" and the train wreck documentary "Some Kind of Monster" the band had to work hard to claw back the respect and renewed loyalty of the metal-heads. Did they do it? Yes and No. This album is way better than it's predecessor, but sadly pales in comparison to "Metallica" and "Load" and for all the talk of taking the band back to their thrash days, it doesn't even come close to "And Justice For All" or the "Master..." masterpiece. It's too bad because I remember the sensory overload and sheer joy of seeing them play live "back in the day" on the "Damaged Justice" tour. To me that was Metallica at their best; rage, aggression and raw power in a perfect mix. This is not a perfect mix. The first single released was "The Day That Never Comes" and its good-thank God for the return of Kirk Hammett's guitar solos! Follow up releases were "My Apocalypse", "Cyanide" and "The Judas Kiss" but, to be honest, "That Was Just Your Life" and "All Nightmare Long" should have been released instead; they're stronger songs. As far as "The Unforgiven III".. its time to let that whole phase go-James can never capture the intensity and sincerity of the original so why bother. Here's the bottom line; I'm disappointed that this disc wasn't all I had hoped it would be and the toxic seepage from "St. Anger" seems to have taken permanent hold of the band, even if it is only in a small way, and continually casts it's ugly shadow over the band and their efforts. The eternal flame in the torch of Heavy Metal has been passed onto Disturbed and Slipknot anyway; Metallica's best days are behind them. Don't ever let a review discourage you from buying a CD that you're really interested in. A review is just a written opinion, that's all. This is, after all, Metallica and this is their latest CD, fans will buy it no matter what. They want to hear the magic again, or at least try to. By the way, this album has hit the number 1 spot on the charts in over 32 countries, so the sales are fantastic. Luckily for Metallica, their fans are too.
genius October 22, 2008 Randy Woronoski (Regina, Sk., Can.) Let me tell I have been a Metallica fan for 20 + yrs and to me this is by far their most complete record to date. This just proves again they will go down as one of the best heavy metal bands of all time, because let me tell you after seeing them in concert 8 times they are certainly the best live act of all time.
Great album from a great band! October 20, 2008 Customer from Quebec (Canada) Metallica, as the name states it, were never a trash band. They are a heavy metal band. They have recorded some trash metal which confuses their most narrow-minded fans-the trash metal fans. They want them to record the same records after 25 years like some other bands. And they want their albums to sound like scratched. A great band won't do that in 2008! Death Magnetic is an excellent album and sounds like Metallica at their best. Great songwriting, nice solos, good job from Hetfield. Yes, he is not Rob Halford or Bruce Dickinson, but has a distinct voice unlike many of the newer bands sounding all the same. Greatest songs-My Apocalypse, Judas Kiss, All Nightmare Long, Suicide and Redemption, That was Just Your Life, Broken, Beat&Scarred. Weakest song-The Unforgiven III-not bad, but doesn't fit with the Rest of the album.
Excellent! October 3, 2008 Martin Veilleux (Quebec Canada) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Go grab it now!
