Inevitably though, the King's eyes soon begin to wander and Mary is overlooked, helpless to do anything but aid her family's plot to advance their fortunes, replace her with Anne and give Henry the greatest gift of all: a son and heir. So good a job has Ms Gregory done at portraying the Boleyns and Howards as selfish, scheming, treacherous manipulators however, that it becomes increasingly hard to feel empathy for any of them. While Mary is merely hapless, Anne is the most ruthless of them all, so that instead of feeling cheated by knowing the outcome of her story, it only serves to help digest her unpalatable rise. Such a gruesome destiny was never more deserved. Ms Gregory has worked hard at researching her historical references. Daily life at court is described in fascinating detail--from the relentless leisure pursuits, masques and banquets laid on for the easily bored King to the complex hierarchies and machinations of the courtiers. However, the fall of Queen Katherine of Aragon and her only child, the Princess Mary, and the politics of the competing European courts and the break with Rome are seen only as a backdrop to the bawdy goings-on of the Boleyns and their fateful race for the crown. --Carey Green

"The Other Boleyn Girl" retrace le parcours des deux soeurs Boleyn, Mary et Anne, a la cours de Henry VIII. Toutes deux sont le jouet d'une famille ambitieuse, manipulatrice, impitoyable, prete a tout pour parvenir a ses fins. Philippa Gregory nous livre un recit fascinant et suscite l'interet du lecteur jusqu'au bout des 750 pages. Passions, trahisons, complots, cette periode de l'Histoire d'Angleterre est une mine d'or pour un ecrivain de romans historiques. Seul probleme, inherent au genre, c'est qu'on ne sait pas toujours ce qui releve de l'Histoire ou de la fiction. Quoiqu'il en soit, je recommande ce livre sans hesiter. Et pour ma part, j'acheterai probablement d'autres livres de cet auteur.

I loved the fact that Ann's story was told from the point of view of her sister. There are many interesting descriptions of the life court lead at that time, it makes you wonder what Henry VIII was doing regarding England and his people when he seemed to be only obsessed with his ladies and pleasure.

This is NOT just another historical novel, it is an excellent historical novel! Not only is it well documented, but Philippa Gregory certainly knows how to tell a good story and God knows Ann Boleyn's rise and fall is a great story. The court is incredibly well depicted as well as the political games orchestrated by powerful English families to push their daughters into the royal bed. The young girls are just another means of acquiring more riches, more land, more power. Some of them are better at this game than others and for a time Ann Boleyn is the best. Philippa Gregory describes her as bright, demanding and more than often cunning. She appears as a dazzling courtesan driven by a ruthless family. A complex personality living in a merciless environment and at a turning point in English history. Although I knew the end I kept reading through the night to finish it....

bien sur, tout le monde connait deja Anne Boleyn, mais ici c'est de sa soeur Mary qu'il s'agit. P. Gregory nous raconte sa vie et ses amours avec Henry VII avec realisme et passion. C'est un roman historique qui se lit d'un seul trait pour mieux comprendre des personnages qui sont le reflet d'une epoque.
